MINNEAPOLIS — Tensions in the Twin Cities have reached a boiling point following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by federal agents on Saturday. Pretti, an intensive care nurse and lawful gun owner, was killed during a confrontation with U.S. Border Patrol agents in South Minneapolis.

The Incident on Nicollet Avenue Witnesses report that Pretti was documenting the arrest of a woman during an immigration enforcement operation dubbed “Operation Metro Surge.” Video footage circulating on social media appears to show Pretti, who was licensed to carry a firearm, being tackled by agents while holding a cell phone.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), agents fired “defensive shots” after Pretti allegedly brandished a weapon. However, bystanders dispute this account, claiming Pretti was disarmed before shots were fired. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has reportedly been blocked by federal officials from accessing the scene, sparking a jurisdictional crisis between Governor Tim Walz and the White House.

Community in Mourning
A vigil was held Sunday night outside the Minneapolis VA Medical Center where Pretti worked. Colleagues described him as a dedicated nurse who spent his career saving lives. “Alex wasn’t a radical,” said Sarah Jenkins, a fellow nurse. “He was a protector. He died trying to protect his neighbor.”
The shooting marks the second fatality involving federal agents in Minnesota this month, following the death of Renee Good on January 7. As protests swell, local leaders are demanding the immediate withdrawal of federal forces from the state.
