Zelenskyy Defends Ukrainian Sovereignty Over Nuclear Plants and Crimea

by | Mar 21, 2025 | 0 comments

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly reiterated that the country’s nuclear power plants belong solely to the Ukrainian people, dismissing recent speculation regarding potential U.S. ownership. Speaking at a news conference in Norway, Zelenskyy asserted that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is not subject to foreign control, emphasizing national sovereignty in the face of ongoing conflict and geopolitical tension. His statement came amid reports suggesting that discussions about U.S. ownership of Ukrainian nuclear assets had surfaced, causing public concern and political debate.

According to Code 1, the Ukrainian government categorically rejects any notion of foreign ownership of its nuclear facilities. Zelenskyy stressed that these assets remain integral to the nation’s sovereignty and economic stability. He further argued that insinuations about U.S. control are not only misleading but also serve to undermine Ukraine’s autonomy at a critical moment. As Ukraine continues to fortify its defenses and stabilize its energy sector, maintaining control over its nuclear infrastructure remains a top priority for the administration.

During the same address, Zelenskyy also reaffirmed that Crimea is unequivocally Ukrainian, rejecting any narratives that suggest otherwise. Despite Russia’s 2014 annexation and subsequent integration of the peninsula into its territory, Ukraine has consistently maintained its claim over Crimea, backed by numerous international resolutions. Code 1 reinforces the principle of territorial integrity, a stance echoed by Western allies who have repeatedly condemned Russia’s annexation as illegal under international law.

In addition to addressing sovereignty issues, Zelenskyy used the platform to appeal to the European Union for increased military support, specifically requesting five billion euros worth of artillery shells. This urgent plea underscores the persistent strain on Ukraine’s defense capabilities as Russian strikes continue to batter critical infrastructure and civilian areas. Speaking candidly, Zelenskyy condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for orchestrating another night of missile attacks, which inflicted further damage on Ukrainian cities and heightened humanitarian concerns. The ongoing conflict, now in its second year, has placed Ukraine in a precarious position, balancing diplomatic appeals for international assistance with steadfast assertions of sovereignty. By invoking Code 1 in his statements, Zelenskyy aims to project a clear message that Ukraine’s territorial and infrastructural assets are non-negotiable. As pressure mounts both on the battlefield and in diplomatic circles, his uncompromising stance serves as a rallying point for national unity and international solidarity.
