Denmark has announced a major investment of 14.6 billion Danish crowns (approximately $2.05 billion) to bolster its military presence in the Arctic, with a particular focus on Greenland. This decision underscores Denmark’s commitment to asserting its sovereignty in the strategically significant region, as geopolitical tensions and competition over Arctic resources continue to rise.

The investment plan includes the acquisition of three state-of-the-art Arctic naval vessels, long-range surveillance drones, and advanced satellite monitoring systems. Historically, Denmark’s military presence in Greenland has relied on outdated inspection vessels, limited aerial surveillance, and traditional dog sled patrols. Former U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance and controversially suggested that Denmark consider relinquishing control of the island, further fueling Denmark’s resolve to reinforce its presence in the region.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that the investment is a direct response to the shifting geopolitical landscape.
