Cuba Shaken by Hundreds of Aftershocks Following Major Earthquake

by | Nov 12, 2024 | 0 comments

Following a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Cuba, the country has experienced an ongoing series of aftershocks, with 495 recorded by late Sunday. More than 20 of these aftershocks have been felt in the province of Granma, causing residents to remain on high alert. The initial earthquake, reported as a magnitude 6.0, was soon followed by a stronger 6.7 magnitude tremor, with aftershocks measuring between 2.5 and 5.9 on the Richter scale.

Authorities from the National Seismological Service and local officials have been closely monitoring the situation, especially around Pilón, an area significantly affected by the quakes. Although there is no tsunami risk, Governor Manuel Falcón Hernández of Santiago de Cuba has urged residents to take precautions. On his official social media, Falcón advised people to prepare an emergency bag containing essential items like identification documents, non-perishable food, medications, blankets, and house keys. He also suggested keeping exits clear in case a quick evacuation becomes necessary.

The earthquake’s impact has been most noticeable in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Granma, with multiple aftershocks continuing to disrupt daily life. Local authorities are using official media and social media channels to keep citizens informed and have cautioned against misinformation circulating online. Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, Santiago de Cuba’s first party secretary, confirmed the preliminary earthquake’s magnitude and advised citizens to stay connected to official information sources.

Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service, highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that significant structural damage has been reported, particularly in Pilón. Authorities are actively assessing these damages and gathering further information from residents to evaluate the ongoing risk.

As Cuba’s National Seismological Service continues its surveillance, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and to stay prepared for potential additional aftershocks.
