In response to a spate of violent incidents targeting Israeli soccer fans, the city of Amsterdam has imposed a three-day ban on public demonstrations. The decision comes after several fans of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were attacked late Thursday, following their team’s Europa League match against Dutch club Ajax. Authorities have condemned the violence, describing it as antisemitic and calling for a thorough investigation.

According to the Amsterdam police, several Israeli fans were injured in what they called a series of “hit-and-run” attacks carried out by individuals on scooters. The assailants reportedly roamed the city, searching for Maccabi supporters, sparking widespread concern over public safety and leading officials to respond swiftly. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema expressed deep regret and outrage at the incidents.

“This is a terrible moment for our city,” Mayor Halsema stated during a press conference on Friday. “I am very ashamed of the behavior that was shown last night.” She went on to emphasize that Amsterdam, known for its tolerance and diversity, has no place for such violent acts, which appear to be motivated by hatred.

The Amsterdam police have initiated an extensive investigation, aiming to identify and apprehend those responsible for what they called “criminal, antisemitic attacks.” Local authorities have also increased security across the city to prevent further incidents and to maintain order.
