Woman Dies After Tragic Propeller Accident at Kansas Airfield

by | Oct 28, 2024 | 0 comments

A woman tragically died on Saturday after accidentally backing into a plane’s propeller while attempting to take a photograph at Cook Airfield in Derby, Kansas, officials reported.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office stated that the woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, suffered critical injuries in the accident and later succumbed to them at the hospital, as confirmed by NBC affiliate KSNW. The sheriff’s office has not yet released additional details regarding the incident.

According to Air Capital Drop Zone, a skydiving company based in Kansas, the woman had joined one of their flights as an observer to capture photos. After the plane had safely landed, she reportedly attempted to take more pictures near the plane. However, as the next group of jumpers began boarding, she accidentally moved in front of the plane’s wing, violating basic safety protocols. With her camera held up to capture images, she took a small step backward, unknowingly moving into the path of the spinning propeller.

“After the airplane landed, for unknown reasons, as the next group of jumpers were boarding, she moved in front of the wing, a violation of basic safety procedures,” the company stated. “With her camera up to shoot photos as she did so, she stepped back slightly, moving toward and into the spinning propeller.”

Cook Airfield, located approximately 15 miles south of Wichita, released a statement on social media on Sunday acknowledging the woman’s death and extended condolences to her family and friends. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young lady who died yesterday after a tragic accident with an airplane propeller on Cook Airfield,” the post read.

This tragic incident highlights the need for caution around active aircraft, especially in areas where propellers are spinning. The airfield and skydiving company involved are urging all visitors to strictly adhere to safety guidelines to prevent similar accidents.
