AVROTROS Granted Extension for Eurovision Song Contest 2025 Registration

by | Sep 16, 2024

AVROTROS has been granted an extension by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for registering for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The broadcaster requested more time to consider its participation, due to ongoing discussions with the EBU. The new deadline is now set for November 1, according to an AVROTROS spokesperson. Normally, countries must register by September 15, with the option to withdraw free of charge afterwards.

The talks between AVROTROS and the EBU focus on various concerns, including the disqualification of Dutch artist Joost Klein during the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Although the discussions are progressing constructively, the broadcaster needs more time to make a final decision. “To give this dialogue a fair chance, we requested an extension, and we are grateful that the EBU has granted it,” said AVROTROS.

Earlier this year, the EBU promised improvements following an independent investigation into the 2024 edition held in Malmö. Several delegations had criticized the backstage atmosphere, which sparked discussions about the organization. AVROTROS has expressed satisfaction with the recommendations made from the investigation but has yet to decide on participation in 2025. All options are currently being considered.

The incident involving Joost Klein during the 2024 edition was one of the key issues. The Dutch artist was disqualified after allegedly making a threatening gesture toward a Swedish camerawoman. Although the woman filed a complaint, the Public Prosecutor decided last month to drop the case due to insufficient evidence that the action caused serious fear.

The EBU hopes that the Netherlands will still participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, and AVROTROS remains in talks to explore all possibilities before the new deadline.
