Alcaraz Triumphs in US Open Opener, Extends Grand Slam Winning Streak to 15

by | Aug 29, 2024

Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant form at the Grand Slam level, securing his 15th consecutive victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Australia’s Li Tu in the opening round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday night. The No. 3 seed from Spain, who has already claimed the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year, is eyeing another U.S. Open crown to add to his growing collection of major championships.

Alcaraz, who won his first U.S. Open title in 2022, has been in remarkable form throughout the Grand Slam season. If he can triumph again in New York, he would join an elite group of players—Rod Laver and Rafael Nadal—as the only men in the Open era to win the French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open in the same calendar year. This achievement would further cement his status as one of the sport’s rising stars.

Despite concerns over his fitness after twisting his right ankle in practice and playing just one match since losing to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris Olympics, Alcaraz showed little sign of discomfort in the latter stages of his match against Tu. After dropping the second set, he quickly regained control, displaying his signature blend of power and agility to overpower the Australian qualifier in the final two sets.

The victory sets up a second-round clash for Alcaraz on Thursday against Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp. With his confidence bolstered by a flawless start to the tournament, Alcaraz will look to continue his winning ways as he progresses through the draw, aiming to repeat his U.S. Open success from two years ago.

As Alcaraz advances in New York, tennis fans are eager to see if the young Spaniard can make history by adding another major title to his impressive resume, potentially setting the stage for a Grand Slam trifecta that would place him among the legends of the sport.
