China Faces Food Safety Crisis as Report Alleges Cooking Oil Contaminated by Fuel Transport

by | Jul 10, 2024

Public outrage is surging in China following allegations that major food companies have been using the same tankers to transport both fuel and cooking oil without proper cleaning. This scandal involves Sinograin, China’s largest grain storage and transport company, and the private conglomerate Hopefull Grain and Oil Group.

The Beijing News reported that the practice of using tankers for both fuel and edible oils, such as cooking oil and syrup, was an “open secret” within the transport industry. This revelation has led to widespread concern about food contamination in a country already wary due to past food safety issues.

In response, China’s State Council announced an interdepartmental investigation into the transportation of edible oils. Those found guilty of malpractice will face severe penalties, according to a statement from the top market regulator. Both Sinograin and Hopefull Grain and Oil Group have stated that internal investigations are underway.

Chinese state media has harshly criticized the alleged practices, with state broadcaster CCTV condemning them as “tantamount to poisoning” and showing “extreme disregard for consumers’ lives and health.” Experts cited by state media have highlighted the health risks, noting that long-term consumption of oils contaminated with chemical residues can cause severe health issues, including irreversible damage to organs.

Public backlash has been intense on social media, with many calling for product recalls and stricter industry oversight. Sinograin has launched inspections across its operations, pledging to sever ties with any transport providers violating safety regulations. Hopefull Grain and Oil Group has also indicated that an official investigation is ongoing.

The scandal underscores ongoing challenges in China’s food safety landscape, with President Xi Jinping emphasizing that food safety is a critical test of governance. As investigations continue, this incident could become one of the most significant food safety crises in China since the 2008 melamine milk scandal.
