Klay Thompson is ready for a fresh start with the Dallas Mavericks after 13 years and four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors. The split came after failed contract negotiations this offseason, and Thompson is embracing the change. 

During his introduction alongside new teammates Quentin Grimes and Naji Marshall, Thompson reflected on his time with the Warriors, admitting that last season was challenging and not as joyful as previous years. “Sometimes, breakups are necessary to do what’s right,” he said, comparing his move to Scottie Pippen’s transition from the Chicago Bulls to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Despite initial disappointment, Thompson acknowledged his accomplishments with the Warriors, including his impact on the community and his championship legacy. “They can’t take that away from you,” he noted. 

Thompson is eager to “be rejuvenated” in Dallas, believing the new environment can spur greatness. “Whether you play basketball or work in the corporate world, sometimes change can spur greatness,” he said. “A new change of scenery can do wonders.”

Thompson joins a Mavericks team that advanced to the NBA Finals, pairing him with offensive stars Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. He believes playing alongside them will be invigorating. “Dallas was so attractive because of the young players they have, the style of play,” Thompson explained. “When I was watching the playoffs, I just saw myself fitting in really well with this team.”

Switching to jersey No. 31, Thompson honors Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller, who he modeled his game after. Irving already wears No. 11, Thompson’s number with the Warriors.

As Thompson embarks on this new chapter with the Mavericks, he remains grateful for his time in Golden State but is excited about the future. “I just felt like moving on could reenergize me and do something special for the rest of my career,” he concluded.
