Ryan Garcia Expelled by WBC Following Racist Remarks on Livestream

by | Jul 8, 2024

Renowned boxer Ryan Garcia has been expelled by the World Boxing Council (WBC) after making racist and discriminatory comments during a social media livestream. Garcia’s remarks targeted Black people and Muslims, prompting swift action from the WBC.

In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced Garcia’s expulsion. “Exercising my authority as president of the WBC, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization,” Sulaiman declared. “We reject any form of discrimination.”

Garcia initially posted a form of apology on X, stating, “I was trolling I want all the killing to stop. I love everyone sorry if I offended you.” However, he has since deleted the post. CNN has reached out to Garcia’s representatives for comment but has not received a response.

Garcia’s family issued a statement through ESPN, emphasizing that the boxer’s remarks do not reflect his true character or upbringing. “Our family unequivocally does not support any statements [Garcia] has made regarding race or religion – these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised,” the statement read. The family also highlighted Garcia’s ongoing mental health struggles, expressing their commitment to supporting him through these challenges. “Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being.”

Sulaiman noted that the WBC has previously offered Garcia multiple opportunities to seek help for mental health and substance abuse issues. Despite these efforts, the WBC president felt compelled to take decisive action in response to Garcia’s recent conduct.

Garcia’s expulsion marks a significant moment in the boxing world, underscoring the WBC’s commitment to upholding standards of respect and inclusivity within the sport. As Garcia navigates this challenging period, his family and the WBC remain focused on addressing the underlying issues contributing to his behavior.

The expulsion sends a clear message that discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated, and it highlights the ongoing importance of mental health support for athletes at all levels.
