Dutch Disappointment in Berlin: Austria Clinch Group D with 3-2 Win

by | Jun 26, 2024

The Netherlands’ hopes for a smooth run through Euro 2024 were dashed in Berlin, as a determined Austria emerged victorious 3-2 in a pulsating encounter. This defeat throws the Oranje’s path to the trophy wide open, with a potentially tricky last-16 clash looming.

Despite needing a win to secure top spot in Group D, Ronald Koeman’s men started sluggishly. Their woes were compounded early on when Donyell Malen inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

However, the Dutch showed glimpses of their attacking prowess. Just after the break, Cody Gakpo restored parity with a well-placed finish. Memphis Depay then seemed to have reignited the Oranje dream with a goal in the 75th minute, only for it to be initially ruled out for handball. Thankfully for the Dutch faithful, VAR intervened, bringing the score to a tense 2-2.

Austria, though, refused to be subdued. Romano Schmid’s header put them back in front before their dream was truly sealed by Marcel Sabitzer’s powerful strike just five minutes later. This late goal shattered Dutch hopes and secured a famous victory for Austria, confirming them as Group D winners.

The defeat leaves the Netherlands with questions to answer. Coach Koeman lamented his team’s “lack of control” and defensive lapses in the post-match interview. Donyell Malen’s performance also came under scrutiny, with calls for a change upfront a growing murmur amongst Dutch fans.

While progression to the knockout stages is confirmed, the route ahead looks considerably tougher. A potential meeting with England in the last-16 adds another layer of pressure. The Dutch will need to rediscover their winning formula quickly if they are to challenge for Euro 2024 glory.
