UEFA has announced increased field-side security measures for Euro 2024 following a surge in pitch invasions, with the most notable incident involving fans pursuing Cristiano Ronaldo for selfies. This decision comes after at least six fans attempted to take photos with Ronaldo during Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Turkey in Dortmund on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, UEFA confirmed that “additional safety measures will be deployed” across the 10 stadiums hosting the tournament in Germany. However, specific details of the updated security protocols were not disclosed. UEFA emphasized that any pitch incursion constitutes a breach of stadium rules, leading to expulsion, a ban from all tournament matches, and a formal criminal complaint for trespass.

The pitch invasions peaked when four fans managed to reach Ronaldo during the match, with more attempting to approach him after the game ended. While these intrusions seemed focused on obtaining photos, the security enhancements aim to protect players from potential harm.

Other incidents at Euro 2024 have included a fan with a camera getting within touching distance of Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne during a match against Slovakia in Frankfurt. Additionally, multiple games have witnessed fans breaching the field, raising concerns over player safety.

These measures come in the wake of a similar issue at the UEFA Champions League final three weeks ago in London, where a cash offer by a YouTube presenter reportedly incentivized several pitch invasions.

As of Sunday, Euro 2024 will reach its halfway point with 26 of the 51 scheduled matches completed. UEFA’s increased security efforts are designed to ensure the safety and integrity of the remaining games, addressing the growing problem of fan invasions.
