Egypt Refuses to Transport Israeli Aid Supplies Across Rafah Border

by | May 13, 2024

Egypt has withdrawn from cooperation with Israel for the transportation of aid supplies across the border at Rafah, in response to what Cairo views as an “unacceptable escalation” in Gaza. A government representative stated this on Saturday on the Egyptian news channel Al Qahera, emphasizing that Egypt holds Israel responsible for the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli armed forces took control of the crucial border crossing at Rafah earlier this week, located on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. This action has cut off a crucial route for the delivery of aid supplies. Hundreds of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip depend on emergency aid. Israel also closed the border crossing at Kerem Shalom, just 3 kilometers away from Rafah.

Reports from the United Nations and international aid organizations indicate that it is now nearly impossible to bring food, water, and medicine into the Gaza Strip. Sources within the Red Cross have even stated that the delivery of essential supplies has completely ceased, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Egypt’s refusal to cooperate with Israel for the transportation of aid supplies highlights the increasing tensions in the region and the complexity of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. It also exposes the Gaza Strip’s dependence on external assistance and underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the humanitarian crisis and promote dialogue between the parties involved.
