by | Mar 18, 2024

Aruba’s Prime Minister, Evelyn Wever-Croes, delivered a poignant speech on Anthem and Flag Day, emphasizing the significance of these national symbols in shaping the country’s destiny. The speech marked the commemoration of 48 years since Aruba acquired its own anthem and flag, as well as its autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The ceremony, held at Libertador Gilberto François ‘Betico’ Croes Square, saw the participation of dignitaries including the Governor of Aruba, Mr. Alfonso Boekhoudt, and parliamentary leaders from Aruba and Curaçao. Prime Minister Wever-Croes underscored the importance of the anthem and flag, stating, “A country without its flag and its anthem is a country without destiny.”

Reflecting on the historical significance of March 18th, 1976, Wever-Croes recounted the momentous occasion when Aruba’s flag was first raised at Guillermo Prospero Trinidad Stadium and its anthem played for the first time. These symbols, she noted, were pivotal in fostering unity among Arubans and asserting their identity as a people.

The Prime Minister delved into the backstory of the anthem and flag’s creation, highlighting the meticulous process undertaken by the Hymn and Flag Commissions in selecting these national symbols. The adoption of “Aruba Dushi Tera” as the anthem and the design of the Aruban flag symbolized a collective expression of Aruban identity and aspirations for freedom.

Wever-Croes also celebrated the cultural festivities surrounding Anthem and Flag Day, including singing and poetry festivals, cultural fairs, and school events. She expressed gratitude to educators and students for their active participation in preserving Aruba’s cultural heritage and instilling love for the island among younger generations.

Addressing the broader themes of freedom and resilience, the Prime Minister hailed Aruba’s journey towards autonomy and its ability to weather challenges, including the recent Covid-19 pandemic. She emphasized the resilience of the Aruban people in overcoming adversity and driving the country’s recovery.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Wever-Croes reaffirmed Aruba’s commitment to unity and progress, urging citizens to continue working towards noble causes for the betterment of the nation. The ceremony concluded with a message of hope and gratitude, echoing the sentiment of a resilient nation marching forward with pride and determination.
