In an extraordinary session convened in Istanbul, the information ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states have issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, calling for an “unconditional ceasefire” to prevent further loss of life.

The ministers expressed grave concern over what they termed as Israel’s “systematic oppression, massacre, and genocide” of Palestinian civilians. They emphasized the urgent need for peace and security in the region, asserting that the realization of the Palestinian people’s rights, including national independence and sovereignty with East Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital, is essential.

Criticism was also directed at Israel’s dissemination of misinformation to cover up its actions, with the ministers accusing Israeli authorities of spreading false narratives. They particularly denounced the deliberate targeting of Palestinian journalists as part of a broader campaign to suppress truth and dissent.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of plans for a potential ground invasion of Rafah has intensified concerns. Netanyahu revealed that while a deal between Israel and Hamas could delay the military operation, such an invasion remains imminent if an agreement is not reached.

In an interview with CBS News, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s stance, stating that a ground invasion of Rafah is inevitable, with or without a deal in place. He emphasized the necessity of achieving what he termed as a “total victory.”

Despite warnings from European allies and calls from the US for a credible plan to protect civilians, Netanyahu’s government appears determined to proceed with the offensive in Rafah.

As tensions continue to escalate, the international community faces mounting pressure to broker a ceasefire and pursue diplomatic solutions to end the cycle of violence in Gaza.
