Seize the Grey Wins Preakness Stakes, Ending Mystik Dan’s Triple Crown Bid

by | May 20, 2024

Seize the Grey emerged victorious in the 149th Preakness Stakes at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course, ending Mystik Dan’s pursuit of the Triple Crown on a wet, muddy Saturday evening. Seize the Grey led for most of the race, holding off a late charge from Mystik Dan to secure the win.

The triumph marks a historic moment for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who at 88 years old, became the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race. This victory is Lukas’ seventh Preakness win. Seize the Grey is owned by one of the largest ownership groups in horse racing, consisting of 2,570 individuals.

Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby winner and favorite with 5–2 odds, was a strong contender. Trainer Kenny McPeek had initial reservations about the short turnaround between races but remained confident after examining the horse’s airway and bloodwork. Despite a strong effort, Mystik Dan could not overcome Seize the Grey’s lead in the final stretch.

One notable absence from the race was Muth, a favorite trained by Bob Baffert, who was scratched due to a fever. Baffert, who has an impressive record with eight Preakness wins, had another entry in the race, Imagination, who was at 6–1 odds but had not raced in six weeks.

Jockey Jaime Torres celebrated the victory aboard Seize the Grey, who secured a significant portion of the $2 million purse, with the winner’s share being $1.2 million. The second-place finisher, Mystik Dan, received $400,000.

The Triple Crown’s pursuit now moves to the Belmont Stakes, scheduled for June 8 at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. The race is temporarily relocated due to renovations at the usual venue, Belmont Park. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018.
