Aruba Signs Agreement to Build New Desalination Plant

by | Apr 17, 2024

ORANJESTAD, Aruba – WEB Aruba, the island’s water and electricity utility company, announced today a partnership with Seven Seas Water Group to construct a new seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant. The agreement, signed on April 17, 2024, is a 10-year Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) deal.

The new plant, named SWRO-3, will provide a minimum of 16,500 cubic meters of fresh drinking water daily. This addition is part of WEB Aruba’s long-term plan to ensure a reliable and sufficient water supply to meet Aruba’s growing demand. SWRO-3 will replace the existing temporary water production facility and is expected to be operational by mid-2026.

“This project represents a significant step forward for WEB Aruba and Aruba as a whole,” said WEB Aruba CEO Alfredo Koolman. “The new plant will significantly increase our water production capacity, guaranteeing that we can meet the current and future demand for high-quality drinking water.”

Seven Seas Water Group, a renowned provider of water solutions, was awarded the contract after a competitive bidding process in 2023. The plant will be built on WEB’s existing property.

“We are extremely honored to be chosen to provide WEB Aruba with fresh and reliable drinking water for this historic project,” said Henry Charrabé, CEO of Seven Seas Water Group. “This significant project is one of the largest public desalination tenders in the Caribbean in recent years. We are impressed by WEB’s long-term vision and their commitment to quality, safety, and reliability.”

The project is expected to enhance further WEB Aruba’s ability to deliver affordable and dependable water service to Aruba’s residents and visitors.
