George Russell held his nerve under intense late pressure from Max Verstappen to win a dramatic Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, taking Mercedes to victory in one of the closest finishes of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Russell started from pole and controlled the race for much of the 51-lap contest around the streets of Baku. But what appeared to be a comfortable afternoon became a tense battle after a series of incidents and safety-car restarts reshaped the race.

Verstappen produced one of the drives of the day. Starting only eighth after qualifying, the Red Bull driver worked his way through the field and eventually found himself in second place, giving him a chance to challenge Russell in the closing stages.

The Dutchman closed rapidly and applied pressure all the way to the final straight. Russell, however, managed to keep his Mercedes ahead and crossed the finish line just 0.196 seconds in front of Verstappen.

Isack Hadjar completed the podium for Red Bull, adding another remarkable chapter to a chaotic race in Baku. Six drivers failed to finish, including McLaren’s Lando Norris, highlighting just how unpredictable the race became.

Russell’s victory was also a continuation of a strong weekend for the Mercedes driver. He had produced an exceptional qualifying performance on Friday, taking pole by 0.837 seconds over Charles Leclerc. It was his fifth pole position of the season.

Verstappen’s recovery was arguably just as significant. He had been eighth on the grid, while his Red Bull teammate Hadjar qualified fourth. Verstappen quickly moved forward during the race and eventually emerged as Russell’s principal challenger.

The race also produced plenty of drama behind the leaders. Multiple incidents forced retirements and safety-car interventions, repeatedly compressing the field and giving Verstappen opportunities to close the gap.

For Russell, the result provides another important victory in a season in which Mercedes has been fighting to remain at the front of the Formula 1 field. It was his third win of the season and his first victory in three months.

For Verstappen, second place represented a major recovery from eighth on the grid, although he will know that a race victory was within reach during the final laps.

Baku once again proved why the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has developed a reputation for producing unpredictable races. Long straights, narrow sections, unforgiving barriers and the possibility of safety-car interruptions created another afternoon where a race that seemed under control could change within seconds.

Mercedes had pole position, controlled the race and survived the late attack. Verstappen came within a fraction of taking victory away — but in Baku, 0.196 seconds was the difference between first and second.
