The European Commission has approved €2.8 billion in funding for 94 transport infrastructure projects across Europe, marking a major step in the EU’s efforts to promote greener, smarter, and more connected mobility.

The funding is part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF-Transport), the EU’s key program for supporting sustainable and cross-border transport development. The latest round of investments will support projects that aim to reduce emissions, improve digital integration, and strengthen transportation links between EU member states.

“This is about building the future of European mobility—faster, cleaner, and better connected,” said Adina Vălean, EU Commissioner for Transport. “We are investing in rail, inland waterways, ports, and multimodal hubs, all while aligning with our climate and resilience goals.”

The 94 selected projects represent a wide geographic and strategic spread across the EU, reflecting the diverse transport needs of the continent. The investments include the modernization of railway infrastructure, implementation of smart traffic management systems, upgrades to seaports and inland waterways, and the development of clean fueling networks to support sustainable mobility. Notable projects include over €37 million allocated to Croatia for expanding the port of Dubrovnik, enhancing navigation along the Sava River, and installing intelligent traffic systems on key highways. Finland will receive more than €90 million to strengthen Arctic maritime logistics, including the construction of a new icebreaker to ensure year-round trade routes. Meanwhile, Austria, the Netherlands, and Romania will direct funding toward railway electrification, logistics integration, and the development of intermodal freight terminals—critical steps toward reducing emissions and boosting efficiency across Europe’s transport network.

According to the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), 83% of the funding will go toward projects that directly contribute to environmental and climate goals.

Addressing Climate and Connectivity Challenges

Transport currently accounts for around 25% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Commission has identified it as a critical sector in achieving the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality targets.

“By investing in clean, digital, and efficient transport infrastructure, we not only meet climate goals but also support economic competitiveness and social cohesion,” said a CINEA spokesperson.

The projects are also expected to enhance the resilience of Europe’s transport systems. Recent crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, have exposed vulnerabilities in Europe’s supply chains and logistics networks. CEF-backed investments aim to future-proof critical routes and improve cross-border coordination.

Long-Term Investment

This announcement is part of a broader EU commitment to modernize European mobility. From 2021 to 2027, the EU plans to invest €25.8 billion in transport through the CEF program. To date, over 790 projects have received support, focusing on rail corridors, port modernization, and innovative traffic systems.

Analysts say the funding could generate thousands of jobs across Europe while accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility.
