A top Hamas leader and one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel has been killed in a targeted airstrike in Gaza City. Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, described by Israeli intelligence as a co-founder of Hamas and key military strategist, was struck in the Sabra neighborhood Friday night, Israeli officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to a joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA), Al-Issa served as the “Head of Combat Support” within Hamas’s military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades. He played a central role in planning the October 7 assault that left 1,200 people dead—including 43 Americans—and saw around 250 hostages taken into Gaza.

The strike, reportedly carried out with precise intelligence and surveillance, also killed Al-Issa’s wife and grandson. Israel called the operation a significant success, targeting a man they described as “one of the last remaining senior Hamas commanders” and a major architect of the group’s military rebuild following the October 7 attacks.

Al-Issa was known for his strategic mind and operational reach. He helped design Hamas’s training programs and supervised its aerial and naval divisions. He previously operated in Syria and Iraq, later returning to Gaza where he helped establish the Qassam Brigades’ military academy, training thousands of fighters and refining the group’s armed capabilities.

This elimination is the latest in a series of high-level strikes by Israel, aimed at dismantling Hamas’s leadership and disrupting its command structure. It follows the deaths of other senior operatives, including Mohammed Sinwar and Asaad Abu Sharia, as part of Israel’s broader campaign to weaken the group’s military backbone.

While Israel sees these operations as essential for national security, the ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to draw international concern. The enclave remains under siege, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction since the start of the war. Civilian casualties, like those from this strike, continue to fuel global calls for restraint and humanitarian relief.

U.S. and Israeli officials maintain that dismantling Hamas’s leadership is necessary to prevent future attacks and ensure long-term regional stability. However, experts caution that while such high-profile eliminations may temporarily disrupt operations, Hamas has shown resilience and an ability to replace lost leaders quickly.

Still, the symbolic and strategic weight of Al-Issa’s death is significant. As one of the founders of Hamas’s military structure and a key player in its most devastating attack in decades, his removal represents both a tactical and psychological victory for Israel.

The conflict shows no signs of slowing. As Israel continues its targeted strikes and ground operations, diplomatic efforts to broker ceasefires and secure hostage releases remain stalled. Meanwhile, tensions across the region are rising, with related skirmishes reported in Lebanon, Syria, and the Red Sea.

The killing of Hakham Al-Issa adds another chapter to this escalating conflict—one that underscores both the precision of Israel’s military campaign and the ongoing complexities of a war with no clear end in sight.
