OAS Secretary Defends Panama Following Donald Trump’s Criticisms

by | Jan 21, 2025 | 0 comments

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, came to Panama’s defense after critical remarks made by Donald Trump during his inaugural address as the 47th President of the United States. Trump, who assumed office on Monday, mentioned Panama in a context that sparked diplomatic tensions and immediate reactions across the region.

Trump’s Comments in the Inaugural Address

In his speech, Trump referred to alleged unfair trade practices in Latin America, citing Panama as an example of countries that, according to him, have benefited at the expense of the U.S. economy. These remarks not only surprised Panamanian diplomats but also provoked responses from regional leaders concerned about the confrontational tone of the new U.S. president.

Trump, who campaigned on promises to adopt protectionist measures and renegotiate trade agreements, stated, “We will not allow any nation, big or small, to take advantage of America’s generosity without giving anything in return.” Although he did not provide specific details to back his accusations, these words have triggered immediate diplomatic tensions.

OAS Response

Luis Almagro described Trump’s remarks as “unjust and misinformed.” In a press conference convened hours after the inauguration, the Secretary General emphasized Panama’s role as a key partner to the United States in trade, security, and regional cooperation.

“Panama is not only a strategic bridge between the Americas but has also demonstrated its commitment to economic and political stability in the region,” Almagro said. “Statements like these only seek to divide at a time when international cooperation is more necessary than ever.”

Almagro also underscored the OAS’s commitment to fostering dialogue among member states to prevent conflicts and tensions arising from such declarations.

Panama’s Response

The Panamanian government, through its foreign ministry, issued a statement reaffirming its willingness to maintain constructive diplomatic relations with the United States. However, it also rejected “any allegations that do not reflect the reality of our historic relationship and shared values between both nations.”

The Panamanian president, in a message to the nation, called for calm and assured that Panama would continue working to strengthen its position as a strategic ally in the hemisphere.

A Controversial Start

Trump’s return to the White House has begun with a divisive tone that promises to redefine U.S. diplomatic relations with Latin America. While regional leaders call for unity and mutual respect, the new president’s initial statements suggest a possible era of heightened tensions in foreign policy across the continent. The OAS’s public defense of Panama indicates that the coming years will be marked by intense debates over trade, cooperation, and sovereignty.
