Caitlin Clark Breaks WNBA Rookie 3-Point Record in Fever’s 84-80 Win Over Sun

by | Aug 30, 2024

Caitlin Clark set a new WNBA rookie record for 3-pointers on Wednesday night, leading the Indiana Fever to an 84-80 victory over the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The 3-point milestone came just three minutes into the first quarter when Clark hit her 86th 3-pointer of the season, surpassing the previous record of 85 set by Rhyne Howard in 2022.

Clark, who has been a standout in her debut WNBA season, scored 19 points in the game. While she struggled with her 3-point shooting, going 3-for-12 from beyond the arc, she contributed significantly to the Fever’s win with a crucial layup in the final minutes. This basket gave Indiana an 82-80 lead, which they maintained to secure the victory.

Earlier in the week, Clark tied Howard’s 3-point record during the Fever’s 84-79 win over the Atlanta Dream. Clark’s step-back 3-pointer over Howard in the fourth quarter of that game set the stage for her record-breaking performance against the Sun.

Clark’s remarkable season has seen her averaging 18 points and a league-high 8.2 assists per game. She ranks fourth in the WNBA for 3-pointers made per game, averaging 2.8. Additionally, she became the fastest player in league history to reach 500 points and 200 assists earlier this month, a feat no rookie had ever accomplished.

The Fever’s win over the Sun brought their season record to 14-16, placing them seventh in the WNBA standings and keeping them firmly in the playoff race. This marks a significant improvement for Indiana, as it’s the first time the team has reached 14 wins in a season since 2016. Clark’s leadership and scoring ability have been pivotal in the Fever’s resurgence, solidifying her status as one of the league’s most exciting young talents.
