Putin Extends Invitation to Maduro for BRICS+ Summit in Russia

by | Aug 5, 2024

Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially invited Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to attend the BRICS+ meeting scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 23 to 24, 2024. The invitation underscores Russia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Venezuela and other nations involved in this multilateral forum. The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is seeking to expand its partnerships with other emerging economies.

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yvan Gil, confirmed the invitation, highlighting that it was extended by President Putin himself, as Russia holds the chairmanship of BRICS this year. Gil emphasized the importance of Maduro’s presence at the summit, which aims to discuss and identify areas for enhanced cooperation among member and partner countries.

President Putin expressed that Maduro’s participation would enrich the discussions at the BRICS+ meeting and contribute to identifying promising areas for multilateral cooperation. Putin highlighted the potential benefits for the global majority, indicating a focus on inclusive and broad-based development strategies. The BRICS+ meeting is expected to address various global economic issues and explore ways to strengthen collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, and sustainable development.

Maduro’s attendance at the summit could further solidify Venezuela’s position as a key partner in the BRICS+ framework. Venezuela’s involvement in discussions with major emerging economies provides an opportunity for the country to seek new avenues for economic cooperation and investment, which are crucial given its ongoing economic challenges.

The invitation to Maduro aligns with Russia’s broader foreign policy goals of fostering alliances with nations outside the Western sphere of influence. As the BRICS+ meeting approaches, participating countries will likely explore strategies to enhance economic ties and address shared global challenges, reinforcing the significance of multilateral cooperation in the evolving international landscape.
