On the eve of “Super Tuesday,” traditionally the most important day in the American primaries, Donald Trump has scored another victory. In North Dakota, he defeated Nikki Haley once again, his sole remaining rival among the Republicans.
It is expected that Donald Trump (77) will further strengthen his grip on the party’s presidential nomination on Tuesday when elections are held in fifteen states and one U.S. territory. Americans in California, Texas, and American Samoa, among others, are set to go to the polls on Tuesday.
On Sunday, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley (52) won her first nominating contest in Washington D.C., but she is already far behind former President Trump, who is expected to have little trouble winning the remaining races as well. Trump’s campaign team believes they will have enough delegates within two weeks to secure the nomination definitively. Therefore, no one expects Haley to remain in the race for long after Super Tuesday.
Biden versus Trump again?
Normally, Super Tuesday is a crucial moment for candidates to position themselves as the party’s preferred nominee, but this time it already seems certain that the current president, Joe Biden (81), will face off against former President Trump in November.
Both CNN and The New York Times are openly questioning whether Haley will withdraw in the event of another loss on Tuesday. So far, she has lost the primaries in almost all states, but she insists that Republican voters deserve a choice because the party is divided over Trump.
There is even less competition among the Democrats. President Biden has no serious challengers and is on course to win his party’s nomination. However, he has come under pressure because in the Michigan primaries, one hundred thousand people did not vote for any candidate. Activists had called for this to express their dissatisfaction with Biden’s policy towards the Gaza Strip. American media are wondering if there will be more protests like this on Super Tuesday.
