Starfish Strandings Blanket Margate Beach After Stormy Weather

by | Feb 29, 2024

Margate, Kent, UK – February 28, 2024 – Beachgoers in Margate were met with an unusual sight on Monday as thousands of starfish washed ashore, blanketing the beach between Margate Winter Gardens and the Lido. Local resident Andy Freeman captured the scene and shared photos on social media, sparking concern among residents.

The Thanet District Council has attributed this event to the recent bout of rough seas and strong onshore winds. This explanation aligns with statements from the Environment Agency, which highlights how creatures like starfish are particularly vulnerable during such weather conditions due to their habitat on the soft seabed.

While the initial reports haven’t reached the Environment Agency yet, similar occurrences are considered natural phenomena. The agency emphasizes the importance of monitoring for any unusual elements in such situations. Though starfish wash-ups are more frequent during autumn and winter due to increased storm activity, they can occur year-round.

While the sight of these marine animals washed ashore can be unsettling, the Thanet District Council urges the public to maintain a safe distance from the starfish. This precaution is crucial as stranded starfish, even if deceased, can potentially carry infectious diseases.

Local authorities are currently monitoring the situation and will likely remove the starfish in due course. The council advises residents to report any further sightings to the appropriate authorities to ensure proper management and maintain beach safety.
