Sergio Garcia’s recent victory at LIV Golf Hong Kong has reignited his hopes of securing a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup. The 45-year-old Spaniard shot a stunning seven-under-par 63 to finish 18 under, clinching the title by three strokes over South Africa’s Dean Burmester. With the Ryder Cup set for September at Bethpage Black, Garcia hopes his performance will persuade Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, to include him as one of his six wildcard picks.
Garcia, the all-time leading points scorer in Ryder Cup history, has long expressed his desire to match Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo’s record of 11 appearances for Team Europe. To improve his chances, he rejoined the DP World Tour last November and paid off fines reportedly totaling £1 million, which stemmed from his move to LIV Golf in 2022. While LIV events do not contribute to the Official World Golf Ranking—leaving Garcia outside the top 400—his recent form may still be enough to catch Donald’s attention.
“We’ve been in touch, so I know that he [Donald] is keeping an eye [on me],” Garcia stated after his win in Hong Kong. “The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf. I just want to help the European team like I’ve tried to do every single time I’ve been a member of that team. Hopefully, he will think I’m good enough for it.”
Garcia’s victory was his second in the LIV Golf series, following his win at LIV Golf Andalucia last year. His final round in Hong Kong showcased his experience and composure, with an eagle on the par-five third hole followed by four consecutive birdies from the eighth to the eleventh, putting him firmly in control of the tournament. Despite the ongoing debate surrounding LIV Golf and its players’ eligibility for traditional competitions, Garcia’s success proves he remains a formidable competitor.
With the Ryder Cup looming, Donald faces a difficult decision regarding Garcia’s selection. While his pedigree and experience make him an asset, his lack of ranking points and participation in LIV events could pose challenges. Ultimately, Garcia’s fate will depend on his continued performances and whether Donald values his experience enough to grant him a wildcard spot on Europe’s team.
