Germany’s Next Chancellor: The Future of Europe at Stake

by | Feb 20, 2025

Germany’s upcoming federal election on February 23, 2025, will not only shape the country’s future but also have significant consequences for the European Union, security, and foreign policy. The four leading chancellor candidates—Friedrich Merz (CDU), Olaf Scholz (SPD), Robert Habeck (Greens), and Alice Weidel (AfD)—each offer different visions for Germany’s role in Europe and beyond. One of the most controversial positions comes from Alice Weidel, whose party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), is pushing for a potential “Dexit”—Germany’s exit from the EU.

Merz: Strengthening Germany’s Role in the EU and NATO

Friedrich Merz, leader of the center-right CDU, is a strong advocate for European unity and defense cooperation. He proposes reintroducing conscription to strengthen Germany’s military and supports increased military aid to Ukraine, including long-range weapons. Merz believes that a stronger Germany within the EU and NATO is essential for regional stability.

Scholz: A Cautious Approach to Foreign Policy

Current Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the SPD has maintained a moderate stance, supporting EU integration while being more cautious in military commitments. He has faced criticism for delayed weapons deliveries to Ukraine but remains committed to diplomatic solutions and stability within the EU.

Habeck: Green Policies and European Unity

Robert Habeck, representing the Greens, focuses on climate policy, human rights, and stronger EU cooperation. He supports continued military and economic aid for Ukraine and emphasizes the transition to renewable energy to reduce European dependence on fossil fuels. His approach aligns with a progressive, sustainability-driven European vision.

Weidel: The Push for Dexit and Nationalism

Alice Weidel and her far-right AfD party are the only major political force advocating for Germany’s withdrawal from the EU. They propose a referendum on EU membership and a more neutral stance on the Ukraine war. While the AfD has gained around 21% in polls, mainstream parties have ruled out coalition talks due to its controversial nationalist and anti-immigration policies.

What’s at Stake?

The election’s outcome will decide whether Germany strengthens its role in the EU or moves toward nationalism and isolationism. A Merz or Scholz victory would likely mean continued European cooperation, while a win for Weidel could trigger uncertainty about Germany’s commitment to the EU. As Germany prepares to vote, the world watches closely—because the next Chancellor will not just shape Germany, but the future of Europe itself.
