Despite speculation linking Deion Sanders to the Dallas Cowboys’ head coaching job, the University of Colorado coach made it clear that he has no interest in coaching at the professional level. Speaking on his show We Got Time Today, Sanders emphasized that the current state of NFL practices would make it impossible for him to coach at that level.

Jerry Jones Reached Out, But No Formal Interview

Reports surfaced that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had reached out to Sanders during the team’s head coaching search. However, no formal interview took place before the Cowboys ultimately hired Brian Schottenheimer. While Sanders admitted that hearing from Jones was intriguing, he remains focused on building Colorado’s program and has no intention of jumping to the NFL anytime soon.

Speaking with former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman on his show, Sanders reflected on the intensity of practices during his playing days in Dallas. He pointed out that he always challenged Michael Irvin in practice, ensuring the wide receiver didn’t catch passes, while Aikman pushed himself to avoid incompletions. Sanders contrasted this with the modern NFL practice culture, which he believes lacks the competitiveness and toughness he values.

Why Sanders Doesn’t See Himself in the NFL

“The way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn’t take it as a man and as a football enthusiast,” Sanders said. “I care about the game. The game is still providing for Troy and I. There’s no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”

Sanders’ comments suggest he sees a different level of discipline and intensity in college football compared to the NFL. As a coach, he has brought old-school toughness to Colorado, where he has already made a major impact, transforming the program and bringing national attention to the Buffaloes.

Aikman Thinks Sanders Would Be a Great NFL Coach

Despite Sanders’ reluctance, Troy Aikman believes that his former teammate would thrive in the NFL as a head coach. Aikman noted that continued success at Colorado could lead to more NFL teams expressing interest in Sanders in the future.

For now, however, Coach Prime remains committed to the college game, where his coaching style, energy, and passion continue to shape young athletes. While NFL teams may continue to call, Sanders seems content staying right where he is—at the helm of Colorado football.
