by | Jan 6, 2025

A Legendary Entertainer and Singer

Rudolfo Valentino “Vale” Croes (November 5, 1951 – April 6, 2015) is considered an icon of Aruban culture. Known for his unforgettable humor, singing talent, and love for the island, he made a deep impression on the local entertainment industry. Croes combined his passion for music and humor with an unwavering dedication to promoting Aruban traditions.

Early Years and Career

Vale Croes was born in the neighborhood of Pos Chikito, where he grew up as one of twelve children. At the age of seven, he began singing in the choir of the Sagrado Corazon Church in Savaneta, led by Carmen de Kort. His musical journey started there, while he also became technically skilled in other fields.

In 1966, Croes graduated as a carpenter from the Martin Luther King School in Aruba. He worked at companies such as Bosch Plastics, Parsons’ Corporation, and the Lago Refinery. In 1972, he traveled to the Netherlands to specialize in fiberglass technology. Later, he joined the Aruban government, where he worked from 1980 to 2011. Despite his diverse career, Croes’ heart remained devoted to music and humor.

Musical and Comedic Career

His artistic career began in the mariachi group “Mariachi Perla di Aruba” and later as a member of the band “Sensacion del Caribe” (1973–1980). Croes became a star in the carnival world, where his humor and charisma entertained countless people. His motto, inspired by radio host Ito Tromp, was: “Cana busca alegria, pasobra tristesa ta bin di mes” (“Seek joy, because sadness comes by itself”). This idea was the core of his performances.

In 1974, he was crowned “Prins Coriente” alongside Robbie Jansen as “Pancho Lenga.” In 1979, he was named “Prins di Prinsnan” of the carnival, a prestigious role that solidified his status as an entertainer. His first comedy show took place in 1973 at the Connie Francis Club, and in 1981, he performed at the Cas di Cultura. Although his early shows had mixed success, he gained wider recognition after a performance in Curaçao.

From 1981 to 1996, Croes performed to full houses in Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire. In 1994, he organized a cultural tribute under the title “Homenahe na nos cultura, folklore y costumber.” After a break, he returned in 2006 with the show “Pita bo auto prome bo yega cas,” released as a DVD. His artistic farewell came in 2011 with the show “Bahando cu penshon” at the Renaissance Convention Center.

A Lasting Legacy

Vale Croes is remembered as a pioneer who shaped the Aruban entertainment industry. His performances were not just a source of entertainment but also reinforced the identity and pride of the Aruban community. His work continues to inspire new generations, while his legacy lives on in the memories of many.

With his unique talent and boundless energy, Vale Croes made a lasting impact on Aruba. He remains a symbol of joy and cultural richness, a true legend who will always live in the hearts of his audience.
