How the Browns Bottomed Out in 2024 and What Comes Next

by | Jan 3, 2025 | 0 comments

The Cleveland Browns’ 2024 season has been one of disappointment and confusion, marking a steep decline from their promising playoff campaign just a year ago. With a 3-13 record heading into their season finale against the Baltimore Ravens, the franchise faces critical questions about its leadership, quarterback situation, and overall direction. Despite optimism entering the year, compounded failures across the roster and coaching staff have left fans and analysts questioning how the Browns fell so far so quickly.

A Fall from Grace

In 2023, the Browns were among the NFL’s feel-good stories, riding the league’s No. 1 defense and a steady performance from veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to a playoff berth. However, the team opted not to re-sign Flacco, prioritizing the return of Deshaun Watson from injury. Watson, signed to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract in 2022, failed to meet expectations. A torn Achilles in October ended his season, but his earlier performances were already underwhelming, with Cleveland scoring under 20 points in all seven of his starts. Watson’s struggles—both physical and mental—highlighted the team’s ongoing identity crisis on offense.

Coaching Changes and Identity Issues

The Browns’ offseason moves further destabilized their offense. The surprising decision to replace offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt with Ken Dorsey puzzled both players and analysts, as Van Pelt had guided the team to respectable offensive numbers despite quarterback instability in 2023. Dorsey was brought in to better suit Watson’s preferred style, but the transition created a disjointed offensive scheme. Veteran lineman Joel Bitonio described the team as “struggling with our identity,” as the Browns juggled elements of multiple offensive systems without mastering any.

Defensive and Special Teams Struggles

The Browns’ defense, while still formidable, suffered from overexposure due to the offense’s inefficiency. Defensive stalwart Myles Garrett voiced concerns about the team’s direction, emphasizing the need for clarity in their offseason plans. Meanwhile, kicker Dustin Hopkins struggled, missing a league-high nine kicks, further compounding the team’s woes.

Watson’s Future and Offseason Decisions

Watson’s massive contract makes him a focal point of Cleveland’s plans, but questions linger about his ability to regain confidence and consistency. With Watson likely to remain on the roster, the Browns must decide whether to bring in a veteran quarterback to compete with him or draft a young prospect with their anticipated top-5 pick in 2025. Potential free agents like Kirk Cousins or Jacoby Brissett and a deep draft class offer options to bolster the quarterback room.

What Lies Ahead

Despite the disastrous season, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is expected to retain head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry, valuing the continuity they have brought to a franchise long plagued by instability. With significant offseason flexibility, including 11 draft picks and cap management options, the Browns aim to rebuild around a clearer identity. However, Watson’s performance and the team’s ability to navigate his contract will likely define their 2025 campaign.

The Browns face a pivotal offseason, needing bold decisions and a renewed focus to prevent another lost season and rebuild faith in a fanbase desperate for success.
