International Reactions to the Siege at the Argentine Embassy in Caracas

by | Nov 26, 2024

The siege reported by the Venezuelan opposition at the Argentine embassy in Caracas has sparked strong reactions from the United States, the Organization of American States (OAS), and other international actors. According to the opposition, security forces of Nicolás Maduro’s government have harassed individuals seeking asylum at the embassy, which is currently under the protection of Brazil.

U.S. Condemnation

The U.S. embassy in Venezuela issued a statement on Sunday condemning the acts of harassment, describing them as a violation of international law.

“The deployment of armed forces and blockades severely violate the inviolability of diplomatic missions and the rights of those seeking asylum. We demand that the Venezuelan regime respect its international obligations, cease these intimidating actions, and guarantee safe passage for the asylum seekers,” the statement declared.

OAS Stance

Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS, also spoke out. On Saturday, he labeled the siege as “unacceptable and contrary to international law.” In a post on his X account, Almagro demanded an immediate end to the harassment and respect for the right to asylum.

Opposition Denunciations

Former Venezuelan lawmaker Omar González Moreno, one of the asylum seekers in the embassy, reported that police agents surrounded the location, blocked nearby streets, and used drones to fly over protected areas. He also noted that the embassy was left without electricity and with blocked communication signals.

This is not the first time a similar situation has occurred. In September, opposition members had already reported a siege by Venezuelan security forces.

Argentina’s Response

Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the acts of intimidation. In a statement posted on its X account, it emphasized that these actions “constitute a disruption of the security that must be guaranteed to diplomatic missions” and urged the international community to demand safe passage for the asylum seekers.

With the international community closely monitoring the situation, the diplomatic crisis between Venezuela and its asylum-seeking opposition members continues to escalate, increasing pressure on Nicolás Maduro’s government.
