Bayern Munich’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica on Wednesday was overshadowed by the tragic death of a fan who experienced a medical emergency during the game. The fan was attended to by paramedics and police officers in the stands but sadly passed away en route to the hospital.
The somber atmosphere was evident in Bayern’s stadium shortly after kickoff as the medical situation unfolded. Bayern fans quickly chose to forgo their usual chants and cheers out of respect, creating a subdued environment for much of the match. Supporters’ group Club Nr. 12 announced on social media, “Life comes before sport,” and expressed their condolences to the fan’s family and friends, stating they would not resume their usual vocal support for the remainder of the match.
Though Jamal Musiala’s 67th-minute header, assisted by Harry Kane, secured Bayern’s second win of the Champions League group stage, the celebration remained muted. Players, including midfielder Konrad Laimer, only learned of the fan’s passing after the game, with Laimer sharing condolences: “We wish the family strength… and we’re thinking of all involved.”
The incident has left Bayern fans and players alike reflecting on the importance of community and life beyond the sport, casting a respectful pause over what would have otherwise been a triumphant evening.
