October 6, 2024 – Tensions in the Middle East have spiked again, as Israel’s military reported early Friday that nearly two dozen projectiles were fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israeli territories. This comes amid growing concerns over the ongoing conflict between Israel and militant groups based in Lebanon and Gaza.
Around 7 a.m. local time, air raid sirens rang out across Haifa and the Galilee region, sending residents scrambling for cover. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that approximately 20 rockets had crossed into Israeli airspace. Israel’s advanced missile defense systems intercepted the majority of the projectiles, with others landing in open areas, preventing significant damage or injuries.
A spokesperson for the IDF revealed that interception shrapnel fell in Kiryat Yam, a coastal city just north of Haifa. Although there was some property damage, no injuries were reported in the city or surrounding areas.
Second Wave of Attacks
The rocket barrage continued later in the morning. Around 7:23 a.m., another wave of rockets was detected heading for Israel’s Upper Galilee region. Israeli forces once again intercepted several missiles, with the remainder falling harmlessly in uninhabited areas, the military said.
As the situation remains volatile, the IDF has yet to provide detailed information about potential retaliation or further defensive measures. The origin of the attacks from Lebanese territory suggests that Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed militant group, could be involved, although no group has officially claimed responsibility.
Israeli Airstrike Near Lebanon-Syria Border
In a related development, an Israeli airstrike near the Masnaa border crossing, a crucial gateway between Lebanon and Syria, has halted traffic in both directions. Lebanese Public Works Minister Ali Hamie told CNN that the strike had destroyed a major road connecting Lebanon to Syria, effectively cutting off the Masnaa crossing, which is located along the Beirut-Damascus international highway.
The destruction of this key transport route has already caused significant disruption, as tens of thousands of people have been using the highway to escape the ongoing Israeli bombardments. The Masnaa crossing has also been a critical supply route for both Lebanese and Syrian civilians, as well as military logistics.
During Israel’s 2006 war with Hezbollah, the Masnaa area was similarly targeted as part of the larger Israeli military campaign to weaken Hezbollah’s hold in southern Lebanon. The recent airstrike marks a serious escalation, raising fears of a potential broader conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which could spread across both Lebanon and Syria.
Humanitarian Concerns
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed grave concern over the rising number of civilians fleeing Lebanon due to the hostilities. On Thursday, the UNHCR reported that around 160,000 people have already crossed into Syria, as the fighting intensifies and threatens to spiral out of control.
As the region braces for further unrest, the international community is calling for restraint on both sides. However, with tensions running high and each side preparing for potential escalation, the prospect of a larger, multi-front conflict looms over the region.
The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected in the coming days. Both Israeli and Lebanese officials are keeping a close watch on the situation, as the risk of miscalculation grows with each passing hour.
