Pulisic Shines in Milan Derby as Haaland Reaches 100-Goal Milestone

by | Sep 24, 2024

It was an action-packed weekend across European football, with Christian Pulisic stealing the spotlight in AC Milan’s 2-1 triumph over Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina. Pulisic opened the scoring, while Matteo Gabbia netted a late header to secure the win, ending Milan’s six-game losing streak against their rivals. The victory provided much-needed relief for manager Paulo Fonseca, who had been under pressure following a poor run of results.

In the Premier League, Erling Haaland reached a major milestone by scoring his 100th goal for Manchester City during a thrilling 2-2 draw against Arsenal. Haaland’s remarkable achievement, reached in just 105 appearances, puts him on par with football great Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of how quickly he hit the century mark. With ten goals already in just five league games this season, Haaland appears poised to break his own goal-scoring record.

Over in LaLiga, Atlético Madrid were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano, with a goal from Conor Gallagher failing to secure all three points. The draw saw Atlético fall further behind both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona, bolstered by Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, cruised to a 5-1 win over Villarreal. However, the victory was overshadowed by a potentially season-ending injury to goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

In the Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart stunned Borussia Dortmund with a commanding 5-1 victory, increasing the pressure on new coach Nuri Sahin. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich extended their unbeaten streak under manager Vincent Kompany, setting a new record with 29 goals in their first six matches. Struggles continued for Schalke 04, who parted ways with their manager following a dismal start to their second-division campaign.

In Turkey, Galatasaray claimed a memorable 3-1 win over rivals Fenerbahce, handing José Mourinho his first derby defeat as Fenerbahce manager. The victory saw Galatasaray solidify their place atop the Super Lig, five points clear of their rivals. Mourinho, who was taunted by Galatasaray fans on social media as “The Crying One” after the match, now faces growing scrutiny.

This weekend’s football action across Europe was full of drama, milestones, and surprises, once again showcasing the unpredictability and excitement that define the sport at its highest level.
