by | Sep 26, 2024

As the 2024 MLS season heads toward its conclusion, the latest power rankings see some significant shifts, with teams like the LA Galaxy rising while others, like Inter Miami, hold their ground at the top. This week’s rankings are based on a combination of season statistics, recent performances, and the assessments of writers and experts. Here’s a closer look at the top teams and their recent form.

1. Inter Miami CF

Inter Miami continues to lead the MLS standings, though the last two weeks have seen them stumble with back-to-back draws, most recently a 1-1 tie against New York City FC. Despite being outplayed for portions of the game, Leo Campana’s 75th-minute goal secured a point for Miami before James Sands equalized in stoppage time. With four games left, Miami maintains a six-point lead and remains the favorite to secure the Supporters’ Shield.

2. Columbus Crew

The Columbus Crew have solidified their position as Miami’s closest challenger after a 4-3 victory over Orlando City and a 2-0 midweek win over Toronto. With 56 points and a game in hand, Columbus is poised to close the gap on Miami. Their Oct. 2 showdown with the league leaders could determine the race for the Shield. The Crew’s recent performances have showcased their offensive firepower, positioning them as serious contenders.

3. LA Galaxy

The LA Galaxy rebounded from a 4-2 loss to Portland with an impressive 4-2 win over Vancouver, solidifying their spot as the top team in the Western Conference. With a seven-point lead over second-placed Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy are looking like strong postseason favorites. Riqui Puig’s late-game heroics secured the win over the Whitecaps, helping the Galaxy maintain their push for playoff dominance.

4. FC Cincinnati

Cincinnati continued their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 2-2 draw on the road against Nashville. Despite falling behind twice, Cincy’s resilience helped them earn a point, extending their streak to four games without a loss. Currently second in the Eastern Conference, Cincinnati faces a tough schedule in their final stretch, with matchups against LAFC, NYCFC, Orlando, and Philadelphia ahead of the playoffs.

5. Houston Dynamo

Houston is peaking at the right time, going undefeated in their last five matches. Their 1-0 victory over Austin FC was sealed by a spectacular 83rd-minute bicycle kick from Coco Carrasquilla, earning all three points on the road. With the Dynamo gaining momentum, they are becoming a team to watch as the season nears its conclusion and the playoff race heats up.
