Lando Norris Wins Singapore Grand Prix Despite Close Calls

by | Sep 23, 2024

Lando Norris delivered a thrilling performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing a memorable victory despite hitting the wall twice during the race. The McLaren driver dominated the field and finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, cutting into the Dutchman’s lead in the championship standings. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri also joined Norris on the podium, finishing third in a remarkable race for the team.

From the start, Norris took command, maintaining his lead after the first turn. His car showed exceptional pace throughout the race, setting multiple fastest laps. However, the victory wasn’t without its moments of tension. Norris clipped the wall on two occasions, but miraculously, his car remained intact, allowing him to continue at the front. Speaking after the race, Norris reflected on his close calls but expressed joy at securing the win, stating, “The car was mega, we were flying the whole race.”

For Max Verstappen, it was a challenging race. Although he finished second, the Red Bull driver looked drained and disappointed afterward, acknowledging the tough conditions on the track. “It’s always tough around here, very warm,” Verstappen remarked, as he congratulated Norris on his victory. Despite the second-place finish, Verstappen’s lead at the top of the championship standings is starting to look more vulnerable.

Oscar Piastri’s third-place finish capped off a strong day for McLaren. The Australian praised his team’s strategy and was thrilled to share the podium with his teammate Norris. “Well done on the strategy,” Piastri said over team communications after the race. It marked another important podium for the rising star, solidifying his place as a driver to watch in the future.

As the Formula 1 season progresses, the championship battle remains intense. While Verstappen still holds a strong lead, Norris’ victory in Singapore raises questions about whether McLaren can continue this momentum and challenge for more wins. The gap between the two drivers has tightened, and if Norris continues to perform at this level, the title race could go down to the wire. For now, though, McLaren celebrates a weekend of success, with Norris’ victory breathing new life into the championship fight.
