Wout Weghorst has addressed the transfer rumors surrounding him in the German media. The Dutch striker, currently with Burnley, has garnered interest from Ajax but also has other options, including a potential return to Turkey. “The total package has to be right,” Weghorst commented.
“There are a number of clubs interested, but I’m starting training with Burnley to prepare for what I hope will be a successful year,” Weghorst told Kicker. The striker, who reached the semifinals of the European Championship with the Dutch national team this summer and has a contract with Burnley until mid-2025, is reportedly also on Trabzonspor’s radar. However, when asked specifically about a move to Ajax, Weghorst was clear.
“For me, the total package has to be right, and I think we need to find a solution that suits both Burnley and me. We are expecting our fourth child and have traveled a lot as a family in recent years. I’m looking for a stable place for us, so ‘home’ is certainly an option. Ajax is the biggest club in the Netherlands, I don’t need to say more,” said Weghorst, who had previously stated during the European Championship that he was not considering a move to Amsterdam as he wanted to focus on his performance with the national team.
According to Turkish media, Trabzonspor has significant interest in the striker. Weghorst previously played for Besiktas in Turkey. “The time in Istanbul was amazing. It was perfect for me as a footballer in terms of fans, emotions, and passion. It was an incredible experience,” he reflected.
Weghorst’s career has seen him play for FC Emmen, Heracles Almelo, and AZ in the Netherlands before moving abroad to VfL Wolfsburg, Burnley, Besiktas, Manchester United, and TSG Hoffenheim. The 39-time Dutch international, who turns 32 next week, believes he still has several years left in his career. “I plan to play until I’m 37 or 38 because I feel good and am in top form. Hopefully, the European Championship wasn’t my last tournament. I’ve fought so hard for my international matches that I would never step down voluntarily. The World Cup in two years is definitely a big goal,” he concluded.
