Walmart has initiated a voluntary recall of its “Great Value” brand apple juice after tests revealed elevated levels of arsenic in the product. The recall, announced on the FDA’s website, involves 8-ounce bottles sold in 6-packs across 25 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The juice was found to contain inorganic arsenic levels of approximately 13 parts per billion (ppb), slightly exceeding the FDA’s safety threshold of 10 ppb.
The recall has been classified as Class II by the FDA, indicating that the product could cause temporary or “medically reversible” health effects, though the likelihood of severe health consequences is low. Walmart emphasized that customer safety is a top priority, with spokesperson Molly Blakeman stating that the company has already removed the affected products from stores and is working closely with the supplier to investigate the issue further.
The Dutch manufacturer, Refresco, acknowledged the presence of inorganic arsenic in certain shipments and confirmed its cooperation with the recall. The company stated that it had not received any reports of illnesses or complaints related to the recalled apple juice. Refresco reassured consumers that their safety and satisfaction are of utmost importance, and the company is taking steps to address the situation promptly.
Inorganic arsenic, which can often be traced to contaminated water sources, poses a significant health risk when consumed regularly. Unlike naturally occurring arsenic, which is found at low levels in the environment, inorganic arsenic has been linked to serious health concerns, including cancer and birth defects. The FDA’s guidelines are designed to minimize exposure to this harmful substance in food and beverages.
As Walmart and Refresco work to resolve the issue, consumers are urged to check their purchases and avoid consuming the recalled apple juice. Customers who have purchased the affected products can return them to the store for a full refund. Both Walmart and Refresco are committed to ensuring that this issue is thoroughly investigated and resolved to prevent future occurrences.
