Sean O’Malley Calls Islam Makhachev the ‘Greatest Fighter Right Now’

by | Aug 28, 2024

Sean O’Malley, the reigning UFC Bantamweight Champion, has heaped praise on UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev, declaring him the best fighter in the sport at present. O’Malley, who is preparing to defend his title against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 on September 14 in Las Vegas, views Makhachev as the current top fighter, despite the legendary status of Jon Jones.

O’Malley’s endorsement of Makhachev comes as no surprise given Makhachev’s impressive track record. With a 25-1 professional record and having secured three lightweight title defenses—tying him for the most in UFC history—Makhachev has made a significant mark in the sport. O’Malley acknowledged Jones’ historic achievements but noted that Makhachev’s recent dominance and activity make him the standout fighter at this moment.

“Greatest fighter right now? Probably Islam (Makhachev),” O’Malley told Helen Yee. He contrasted Makhachev’s recent performance with Jon Jones’ limited activity over the past few years. While Jones remains a figure in the greatest-of-all-time conversation, O’Malley believes that Makhachev’s current form sets him apart.

In addition to his praise for Makhachev, O’Malley outlined his own ambitions to become the greatest fighter and the biggest star in the UFC. He acknowledged Conor McGregor’s status as the sport’s biggest star but expressed his desire to achieve a similar level of fame. O’Malley envisions a path to greatness that involves dominating in the bantamweight division, moving up to featherweight, and defeating top contenders like Ilia Topuria, Max Holloway, and Umar Nurmagomedov.

O’Malley’s aspirations go beyond just fighting; he aims to be both a top competitor and a significant draw in the sport. He wants to balance being one of the greatest fighters with being among the most entertaining. His goal is to be recognized as both a formidable competitor and a captivating presence in the UFC.
