In a stunning display of skill and determination, McLaren’s Lando Norris claimed victory at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, overcoming Max Verstappen’s early lead and ending the Dutchman’s three-year winning streak at Zandvoort. The win marks Norris’s second of the season, following his triumph in Miami, and significantly narrows Verstappen’s lead in the championship standings.
Norris started the race from pole position, but his hopes of a clean getaway were dashed when Verstappen surged ahead at the first corner. The Dutch crowd roared as their home hero took control of the race, but Norris was far from beaten. Despite losing ground, the Briton found another gear as the race progressed, while Verstappen struggled with grip issues during the mid-stint. This allowed Norris to close the gap and eventually overtake the three-time world champion, reclaiming the lead in a decisive move.
Once in front, Norris never looked back. He continued to build his advantage both before and after the only round of pit stops, crossing the finish line a commanding 20 seconds ahead of Verstappen. This victory not only boosts Norris’s confidence but also cuts Verstappen’s championship lead to 70 points with nine races remaining in the season.
Behind the leading duo, Charles Leclerc put in a stellar drive for Ferrari, rising from sixth to third to secure a podium finish after a tough weekend for the Scuderia. Oscar Piastri, Norris’s teammate at McLaren, finished fourth after an extended opening stint cost him track position. Carlos Sainz added to Ferrari’s points haul by finishing fifth, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, both of whom made late pit stops to chase the fastest lap.
While Norris celebrated his victory, other drivers also delivered noteworthy performances. Pierre Gasly secured ninth for Alpine, giving the team a morale boost under new boss Oliver Oakes, and Fernando Alonso claimed the final point for Aston Martin. The race saw Alex Albon fight valiantly from the back of the grid to finish 14th after being penalized for an illegal upgrade, and Kevin Magnussen’s long opening stint from a pit lane start ended with an 18th-place finish.
Norris’s victory at Zandvoort not only disrupted Verstappen’s dominance but also reignited the championship fight, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 Formula 1 season.
