NASCAR Cup Series to Make Historic International Debut with Mexico City Race

by | Aug 27, 2024

NASCAR is set to make history by taking its premier Cup Series international for the first points-paying race outside the United States. The groundbreaking event is scheduled for June 15, 2025, at the iconic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. This marks a significant milestone for NASCAR, which has previously only held international exhibition races.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, a 17-turn, 2.674-mile road course renowned among motorsport fans, will host the event. The track, located at an elevation of 7,342 feet, has a storied history, particularly with Formula 1, where it has been a beloved venue since its 1959 construction. Named in honor of Mexican racing legends Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez, the circuit has undergone significant renovations and has hosted eight Formula 1 races since its 2015 remodel.

The decision to bring the Cup Series to Mexico City follows the success of NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series, which held races at the same venue from 2005 to 2008. During that period, future Cup Series stars such as Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex Jr. claimed victories, further cementing the track’s reputation within the NASCAR community.

This historic event will also include races from the Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Mexico Series, creating an action-packed weekend for racing enthusiasts. Notably, this will be the first time that the Cup Series will compete internationally in a points-paying race during the modern era, with previous international ventures limited to exhibitions in Japan (1996-1998) and Australia (1988). The only other points-paying NASCAR events held outside the U.S. occurred in Canada, with races at Stamford Park in Ontario in 1952 and the Canadian Exposition Center in Toronto in 1958.

Mexican driver Daniel Suárez, a standout in the Cup Series, will be among the stars taking on the challenge at the beloved Mexico City circuit. The Mexico City Grand Prix, which once held the distinction of being the fan-favorite event on the Formula 1 calendar, adds another prestigious race to its résumé with the arrival of NASCAR.

This move underscores NASCAR’s commitment to expanding its global reach and bringing its unique brand of racing to new audiences. The June 15 race in Mexico City is set to be a landmark moment, not just for NASCAR, but for international motorsport as a whole.
