Israel Claims Retaliatory Strike on Hezbollah Leader Behind Deadly Attack in Golan Heights

by | Aug 1, 2024

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed on Tuesday evening to have attacked a Hezbollah commander in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. According to Israel, the commander was responsible for the attack on a soccer field in the Golan Heights last weekend, which resulted in the deaths of twelve teenagers. Various Israeli media reported, though unconfirmed, that the target was Fuad Shukr, also known as Hajj Mohsin.

A message from the IDF on X did not clarify whether the commander was actually hit. Two sources told Reuters that the commander survived the attack, which was also reported by Lebanese media. Nevertheless, the IDF stated in a declaration that Shukr had been neutralized.

Shukr is also wanted by the United States for his involvement in the 1983 bombing of American Marines in Beirut, which killed 241 military personnel. The U.S. has offered a reward of 5 million dollars (4.6 million euros) for information leading to Shukr’s capture.

Shortly after the IDF’s announcement, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant posted on X stating that “Hezbollah has crossed a red line.” According to the IDF, Shukr was responsible for the attack on Majdal Shams, though Hezbollah denied any involvement. Despite this denial, Israel launched a retaliatory strike on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon over the weekend.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah are escalating. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote on X on Sunday that the moment is approaching when Israel might decide on a full-scale war against Hezbollah. This escalating situation in the region increases the threat of a larger conflict, with the international community watching with concern.

The recent attacks and the rhetoric from both sides indicate a potential further escalation, with Israeli military actions and Hezbollah’s responses increasing the risk of a large-scale conflict. The coming days will be crucial to see if diplomatic efforts can reduce the tensions or if the region will prepare for a more intensive armed conflict.
