Hillary Clinton Takes Aim at Trump, Crowd Chants “Lock Him Up!” at Democratic National Convention

by | Aug 19, 2024

At the Democratic National Convention on Monday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a sharp critique of former President Donald Trump, drawing enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. As Clinton detailed Trump’s mounting legal issues, the audience broke out into chants of “Lock him up!”—a notable reversal of the 2016 campaign chant Trump supporters directed at her.

Clinton, who faced off against Trump in the 2016 presidential election, highlighted the irony of the current situation. “Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial, and when he woke up, he made his own kind of history—the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions!” she remarked, prompting the crowd’s fervent response.

This chant echoed a similar scene at events for Vice President Kamala Harris, though Harris has recently discouraged such rhetoric, urging her supporters to focus on defeating Trump at the ballot box instead of encouraging his incarceration.

In her speech, Clinton not only addressed Trump’s legal problems but also criticized his presidency while offering strong praise for Vice President Harris. “Kamala cares, cares about kids and families, cares about America. Donald only cares about himself,” Clinton asserted. She emphasized Harris’ commitment to public service, contrasting it with Trump’s self-serving approach.

Reflecting on Harris’ tenure as California’s Attorney General, Clinton recalled Harris’ dedication to justice. “On her first day in court, Kamala said five words that still guide her: ‘Kamala Harris, for the people.’ That is something that Donald Trump will never understand,” Clinton said.

Clinton concluded her remarks with a call to action, urging Democrats to remain vigilant and committed in the face of conspiracy theories and misinformation. “We have to fight for the truth. We have to fight for Kamala as she will fight for us,” she declared, rallying the crowd for the challenges ahead.
