Dodgers’ Latest Injury Could Propel Padres to NL West Lead

by | Aug 21, 2024

The San Diego Padres might find themselves leading the NL West sooner than expected, thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ latest injury setback. Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers’ star first baseman, sustained a potentially serious injury during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, adding to the team’s already challenging season with injuries.

Freeman suffered a hairline fracture in his middle finger after jamming it during Saturday’s game. While initial X-rays were negative, further tests confirmed the fracture. Despite being in the lineup for Monday’s game, Freeman’s injury could have lasting effects that might impact his performance and the Dodgers’ overall chances.

This development could be a significant boost for the Padres, who have seen their chances of clinching the division increase due to the Dodgers’ struggles. Los Angeles’ lead in the NL West has dwindled, creating an opportunity for San Diego, which has emerged as one of the league’s hottest teams. Since July 1, the Padres have posted a 24-13 record, compared to the Dodgers’ 18-19 during the same period.

With the Dodgers’ lead in the division significantly reduced, the Padres have shifted their focus from merely securing a wild card spot to contending for the division title. This turnaround seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago when the Dodgers held a commanding 7.5-game lead.

Padres fans will be closely monitoring any updates on Dodgers’ injuries, as Freeman is not the only key player sidelined. The Dodgers are also missing Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Brusdar Graterol, Tyler Glasnow, Chris Taylor, and Dustin May. The cumulative impact of these injuries could be a critical factor in the race for the NL West crown.
