Club Brugge Fans Perform Nazi Salute at Anti-Racism Event, Club Condemns Actions

by | Aug 5, 2024

During an anti-racism event at a recent football match, some Club Brugge supporters engaged in shocking behavior by performing Nazi salutes. The incident occurred on Sunday before the game against Standard Liège, where the gesture overshadowed an anti-racism demonstration. Club Brugge has publicly condemned these actions and vowed to take appropriate measures against those involved.

Before the kickoff, around 300 youth players from Standard Liège entered the field wearing red and white masks, symbolizing a united stance against racism. The masks aimed to convey a strong message of solidarity and equality within the sport. However, a segment of Club Brugge supporters responded negatively, displaying the Kühnen salute, a variation of the infamous Nazi salute associated with neo-Nazi leader Michael Kühnen.

Club Brugge swiftly addressed the situation, releasing a statement on their website: “During the match, images surfaced on social media showing ‘supporters’ in the away section performing a so-called Kühnen salute. Club Brugge strongly condemns this behavior.” The club emphasized its commitment to identifying those responsible and working closely with the police to investigate the incident further.

The statement continued, “Club will actively support the police in this matter, identify the supporters, and subsequently impose sanctions within our capabilities. The club reiterates that there is no place for racism within the blue-and-black family.”

This is not the first instance of racist behavior among Club Brugge fans. During the Belgian Super Cup match against Union Saint-Gilloise, a supporter was seen performing a Hitler salute, highlighting ongoing concerns about racism and discrimination within the fan base.

Club Brugge’s response reflects a zero-tolerance policy towards racism and an effort to maintain an inclusive environment. As investigations continue, the club aims to enforce strict consequences to deter future incidents and promote a culture of respect and diversity in football.
