Caitlin Clark Sets WNBA Rookie Assists Record in Fever’s 92-75 Victory Over Storm

by | Aug 19, 2024

Caitlin Clark made history on Sunday, breaking the WNBA rookie assists record as she led the Indiana Fever to a 92-75 win over the Seattle Storm. Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, tallied nine assists in the game, bringing her season total to 232, surpassing the previous record of 224 set by Ticha Penicheiro in 1998. Clark also contributed 23 points in the victory, marking her fifth 20-point game in the last six outings.

Kelsey Mitchell was the game’s top scorer, putting up 27 points for the Fever, including five 3-pointers. Lexie Hull also had a standout performance, scoring a career-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, hitting six 3-pointers. Aliyah Boston dominated the boards with 15 rebounds, adding nine points and a career-best eight assists.

The game remained close until the fourth quarter when Indiana went on a decisive 14-5 run, sparked by Hull’s two quick 3-pointers. This stretch gave the Fever a comfortable 10-point lead with just under six minutes left. Despite a brief rally by Seattle, Hull continued her hot shooting, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers that fueled a 15-2 run, effectively sealing the win for Indiana.

Jewell Loyd led the Storm with 26 points, while Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike added 15 and 14 points, respectively. However, the trio struggled overall, shooting just 38.9% from the field.

The Fever, now 13-15, have matched their win total from last season with 12 games still to play. Indiana has found momentum post-Olympics, winning four of their last five games as they push toward a strong finish to the regular season.
