Aaron Judge’s remarkable season reached new heights on Sunday as the New York Yankees’ star slugger became the first MLB player this year to hit 50 home runs. Judge’s milestone came during the Yankees’ 10-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies, where he continued to showcase his incredible power with two home runs, bringing his season total to 51—and it’s still only August.
Judge’s first home run of the day, and his 50th of the season, came in the bottom of the first inning against Rockies’ left-hander Austin Gomber. Down 0-2 in the count, Judge launched a 431-foot changeup into the bullpen in left-center field, giving the Yankees an early 2-1 lead. This homer solidified Judge’s place in history, making him just the fifth player in MLB history to record at least three seasons with 50 or more home runs. He now joins an elite group that includes Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Alex Rodriguez.
Judge wasn’t done yet. In the seventh inning, he hit his second home run of the game—No. 51 for the season—during a sequence of three consecutive Yankees home runs off Rockies reliever Jeff Criswell. This blast extended New York’s lead to 7-3 and highlighted Judge’s ongoing hot streak.
Heading into the weekend, Judge had already made history as the first player ever to post a .375 batting average with 45 home runs over a 100-game stretch in a single season. His performance on Sunday only added to his historic run, as he is now on pace to hit 63 home runs this year, which would surpass the American League record of 62 home runs he set in 2022.
Additionally, Judge has become the first player in MLB history to achieve at least 50 home runs, 120 RBIs, and 100 walks before September. His power, consistency, and discipline at the plate have made this season one for the ages, as he continues to etch his name into the record books.
