Ukraine Strikes Back at Russia with Western Weapons, Achieves Strategic Gains

by | Jul 15, 2024

Ukraine has begun striking Russian targets with Western weapons, marking a significant shift in the conflict dynamics. This move follows the United States and other allies granting Kyiv permission to use advanced weaponry across the border. The change has led to successful counteroffensives and a newfound sense of vulnerability within the Russian military.

A senior officer in Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), known by the call sign Bankir, reported that these strikes have had a substantial impact. “We have destroyed targets inside Russia, which allowed for several successful counteroffensives,” he told CNN.

Ukrainian forces have started receiving Western military aid in full force, including longer-range multiple launch rocket systems and various types of artillery. Ivan, an officer with the 148th Artillery Brigade, noted the effectiveness of these new weapons in slowing down Russian advances. “We can see the impact of the aid every day,” he said.

Despite these gains, Kyiv has yet to reclaim large territories but has successfully prevented the occupation of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Earlier, parts of the Kharkiv region fell to Russian forces, resulting in severe brutality. The recent Western aid and the removal of restrictions on striking within Russia have turned the tide.

International security expert Oleksiy Melnyk emphasized the significance of these developments, describing the potential re-occupation of Kharkiv as a “tragic moment” that led to a policy shift among Western allies. This allowed Ukraine to target key Russian positions, including command posts and ammunition depots, with advanced missile systems like ATACMS.

These strategic strikes have forced Russia to push its missile systems further from the front lines, providing some relief to Kharkiv. The conflict’s dynamics have shifted, showcasing the crucial role of Western military aid in Ukraine’s defense efforts.
