Real Madrid Legend Nacho Fernandez Bids Emotional Farewell to Club

by | Jul 25, 2024

Real Madrid icon Nacho Fernandez was overcome with emotion as he bid farewell to the club at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, marking the end of his illustrious career with Los Blancos. The 34-year-old, who lifted the Champions League trophy last month in his final act for the club, will continue his career with Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League but returned to Madrid to say a proper goodbye.

Nacho struggled to hold back tears as he stood in front of the 26 trophies he won during his 13 years as a first-team player, addressing a room filled with family, teammates, and club staff. The heartfelt ceremony included a special video montage that highlighted his journey with the club, further amplifying the emotional atmosphere.

“It’s a difficult day, different, but emotional. You have given me more than I have been able to give back,” Nacho said. “I have defended this crest on and off the pitch every second of my life. This club is everything to me and to my entire family.”

Nacho reminisced about his 24-year journey with Real Madrid, starting from his days in the youth academy to becoming a first-team captain. He expressed gratitude towards his coaches, particularly Carlo Ancelotti, his teammates, and his family. “Thank you, Real Madrid, for making me a man with perfect values. Thank you, [Carlo] Ancelotti, for believing in me. Thank you, teammates, you are the best,” he added.

Joining Real Madrid’s youth ranks at the age of ten, Nacho climbed through the Castilla ranks to become a versatile and dependable first-team player. Known for his reliability, Nacho surpassed 40 appearances in each of his final three seasons. His six Champions League titles, the first in 2013/14 and the last in 2023/24, place him alongside Madrid legends like Paco Gento, Luka Modric, and Dani Carvajal.

As Nacho moves on to a new chapter in his career, his legacy at Real Madrid remains indelible. His dedication, versatility, and unwavering commitment have left a lasting impact on the club, ensuring he will always be remembered as one of Madrid’s most cherished players.
